Bodedern end hopes
24-07-10
Carmel Second XI's hopes of a promotion challenge in the final third of the season have all but disappeared following a seven-wicket defeat to Bodedern on a damp afternoon on Anglesey.
Trailing the home side by 19 points in North Wales Cricket League Division Four before the start of play anything but a victory would effectively rule Carmel out of the running for second place.
And the afternoon got off to the worst possible start as skipper Barry McGauty lost the toss and Bodedern put Carmel in on a soggy track with the rain blowing across the ground.
Carmel's batsman were not up to the challenge and only Gwion Dafydd (30) and wicketkeeper-batsman Christopher Jones (17) made double figures as the visitors failed to apply themselves in unfavourable batting conditions.
Apart from a last-wicket stand of 19 from Dafydd Timothy (9) and Alec Davies (9no) Carmel's scorecard made for sorry reading as they were bowled out for 90 in 34.2 overs.
After the tea interval Matthew Prescott (1-15) and Timothy (1-16) reduced the home side to 29/2 but as conditions for batting improved the Carmel attack failed to respond as McGauty rotated his bowlers in an attempt to get a third breakthrough.
With only five runs required for victory Lee Rowles (1-9) snared another victim but it was too little too late for Carmel as Bodedern eased past the total in the 27th over to claim an 8-2 share of the points. Full scorecard here...
