Gele wobbled by Daf
12-06-10
Dafydd Timothy claimed 5-19 as Carmel closed the gap at the top of North Wales Cricket League Division Four with a 62-run win over Abergele.
Skipper Barry McGauty won the toss and elected to bat in perfect conditions at Pen-y-Gelli as he and fellow opener Mike Jones put on 54 for the first wicket.
McGauty (28) was out to a smart catch behind and quickly followed back into the pavillion by Second XI debutant Jones (28) but Derek Johnson ensured the early momentum was maintained.
Johnson (29) edged to the wicketkeeper with the score on 93 and Carmel's innings stuttered as Jon Fisher (7) fell cheaply and the run-rate slowed up.
But Timothy Abraham got things back on track with some lusty blows as he shared a 48-run partnership with Gwion Dafydd (17) and a 23-run stand with wicketkeeper Chris Jones (11).
A large score looked possible with Abraham and Oliver Saynor at the crease but the former's luck eventually ran out as he was caught on 42.
Saynor (16) hit a towering six straight down the ground before Timothy (5not out) and Stephen Skates (6no) took Carmel to a total of 204/9 off 45 overs with a late rally in the final few overs.
After the tea interval Saynor (2-46) was able to trouble the batsman with significant bounce out of the pitch and also effected a valuable run out following smart glovework by Christopher Jones but the plaudits went to Timothy.
The ever-dependable seamer claimed his best figures of the season and took his tally of wickets in all competitions to 22 with his second five-wicket haul of 2010.
Johnson (1-20) and the improving Lee Rowles (1-29) also claimed a wicket apiece as the visitors were dismissed for 142 after Timothy struck off the final ball of the match to give the home side an 8-2 points win. Full scorecard here...
