Midweek XI beaten

Stephen Skates took a impressive 4-9 from just three owners but Carmel slipped to galling three-run defeat to Gresford in the Chester & District Midweek League.

The home side produced a superb fielding performance at Pen-y-Gelli to restrict Gresford to 81/7 off their 20 overs.

Dafydd Timothy (3-19) was typically miserly from his five overs with Timothy Abraham and Nick Wahsbrook taking good catches while left-armer Chris Jones (0-13) also showed great control from his quota.

Jack Whitehouse kept his cool to claim a run out but it was Skates who stole the show as he ran through the Gresford batting line-up with a expert display of death bowling from three overs.

Carmel's response got off to a patient start as Nick Washbrook (13) and Derek Johnson put on 28 on for the first wicket before the former was run out after backing up too far.

Johnson ensured Carmel kept up with the asking rate before he was caught for 28 but wicketkeeper Christopher Jones (14) carried on the chase.

However, they were the only players to make double figures and despite needing 13 off the last two overs the home side fell four runs short of victory as they were restricted to 78/9. Full scorecard here...
