Gele set up victory
29-05-10
Carmel & District Cricket Club First XI slipped to a frustrating five-wicket defeat in a rain-hit match against Abergele in North Wales Cricket League Division Two.
On a soggy afternoon Carmel skipper Danny Oliver lost the toss and the visitors suffered a dramatic collapse as they went from 49/1 to 49/4 as their middle-order failed to fire following a rain delay of 30 minutes.
Will Loveland (15) put on 40 for the second wicket with Mike Jones but after he was bowled Carmel lost Jon Fisher and Oliver for no further score.
Timothy Abraham and Jones put on 36 for the fifth wicket but Abraham missed a straight one and was bowled after a measured 22 before Jones reached his half-century.
Jonny Hunter (5), Michael Harrison (3) and Steve 'Scooter' Jones (0) all fell without seriously troubling the scorers but Mike Jones remained steadfast in his defiance of the Abergele attack.
Mike Jones carried his bat with an unbeaten 68 as he and Matt Prescott (3 not out) took Carmel to 137/8 in a match reduced to 41 overs a side.
Carmel's bowling attack struggled to make any inroads into Abergele's batting line-up after the tea interval before Matthew Prescott (1-12) claimed the first wicket before mystery bowler Chris Davies (1-17) got in on the act.
Abergele reached 73/3 after 25 overs as Steve 'Scooter' Jones (2-26) struck before the drinks break and then put the pressure on with another wicket shortly afterwards.
Hunter (1-36) also chipped in with a wicket but Abergele were able to pass the total without any further loss with a handful of overs left as Carmel were on the end of a 7-3 loss. Full scorecard here...
