Aluminium foil First XI
23-05-10
Gareth Hughes made a battling half-century as Carmel's First XI agonisingly fell seven runs short of victory against North Wales Cricket League Division Two rivals Anglesey Aluminium at Penrhos Farm.
Carmel restricted their opponents to 160/7 off their 45 overs thanks largely to Steve 'Scooter' Jones who was rewarded for his line-and-length approach to finish the pick of the attack with 3-31.
Michael Harrison (2-32) also grabbed a brace of wickets while Andrew Skates (1-37) and mystery spinner Chris Davies (1-18) took one apiece.
The visitors made a dreadful start to the run chase after tea as they collapsed to 18/4 as Danny Owens (12), Mike Jones (0), Will Loveland (2) and Barry McGauty fell cheaply.
Timothy Abraham (18) and Hughes helped rescue the innings with a fifth-wicket stand which took Carmel past 50 in 15 overs and enabled them to keep up with the rate.
It was Hughes, though, who gave Carmel a fighting chance of victory before he was caught on 51 but left-hander Michaeel Harrison took over the mantle as he rotated the strike.
With only seven runs required for victory Harrison (25 not out) and last man Chris Davies attempted to take a single which saw the latter run out with 10 balls remaining to give Aluminium a 6-4 share of the points. Full scorecard here...
