Buckley sent packing
04-05-10

Nick Washbrook hit a well-crafted half-century to ensure Carmel progressed to the second round of the Flintshire Knockout Cup following a seven-wicket victory over Buckley.

After winning the toss skipper Danny Oliver inserted the opposition and the decision paid off as Matthew Prescott (2-7) and Christopher Davies (1-29) kept the runs to a minimum.

Buckley were unable to find the boundary until two-thirds of the way through their innings as Barry McGauty (2-25) also kept the pressure on.

Oliver and Prescott both chipped in with a run-out apiece thanks to some handy glovework from emerging wicketkeeper Will Loveland as the visitors were restricted to 103/7 from their 20 overs.

Carmel openers Washbrook and Danny Owens wasted little time in feasting on the Buckley attack as they raced to 29 without loss from the first four overs.

Owens (9) fell in the fifth over when he missed a straight one and was bowled but Washbrook played a typically composed knock as he and Loveland rotated the strike.

Washbrook, who topped the batting averages in 2009, brought up his fifty with powerful on-drive before he was trapped lbw for 58 two overs later.

Derek Johnson (1) was bowled in increasingly darkening conditions but Loveland (31 not out) finished the job when he and new batsman Timothy Abraham (0) ran four off the first ball of the 19th over. Full scorecard here...
