Rain frustrates First XI
01-05-10
Carmel's First XI suffered a frustrating afternoon as their North Wales Cricket League Division Two clash away to Dolgellau ended in a draw after the match was abandoned because of the weather.
Skipper Danny Oliver won the toss and inserted the hosts who made Carmel's bowlers work hard in the early part of the match as they closed in on 90-run stand for the first wicket.
Eventually the pressure told as Steve 'Scooter' Jones (2-43) removed two of Dolgellau's top order while Gareth Roberts snared the home side's key batsman following a piece of swift fielding.
Jonathan Hunter then tore through the Dolgellau middle order as he claimed an impressive 3-36 while Michael Harrison (2-32) also chipped in with a couple of wickets to restrict their opponents to 178/8 off 45 overs.
With threatening clouds gathering overhead, and rain beginning to fall, Carmel's opening pair wasted little time in attacking the Dolgellau bowling after the tea interval.
Typically aggressive strokeplay from Danny Owens (30 not out) saw him bludgeon the ball to the boundary as he shared an unbroken stand of 44 for the first wicket with Jon Fisher (10) off just nine overs.
The weather conditions, though, worsened and the covers went on with no further play possible to leave Carmel's players wondering what might have been had they been given the chance to complete their innings.
The abandonment saw both sides take a 3-3 points split. Full scorecard here...
