Second XI clinch victory
01-05-10
Dafydd Timothy claimed five wickets as Carmel's Second XI secured their first win of the season with a six-wicket victory over Corus Colors in North Wales Cricket League Division Four.
The evergreen seamer formed an excellent new-ball partnership with Oliver Saynor as the visitors were dismissed for 80 in 36.3 overs
Timothy finished with 5-33 while Saynor bowled with intelligence and was deserving of more from his 12 overs than just the one wicket for 22 runs.
Derek Johnson (3-6) and Matthew Prescott (1-16) also got among the wickets to mop up the Corus Colors tail end while the pair also took spectacular catches at fine-leg and long-off respectively.
Carmel’s response after tea got off to a steady start as the hosts progressed to 32/1 off 10 overs overcoming the early loss of Johnson (5) before a middle-order collapse gave the visitors a glimmer of hope.
Gwion Dafydd (8), Alex Blythin (0) and Timothy Abraham (0) all fell in quick succession as the home side crawled to 35/4.
But skipper McGauty held firm and shared an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 46 runs with Christopher Jones.
It took until the 24th over until the first boundary of the innings when Jones found the rope but he freed his arms to punish the change bowlers with some aggressive hitting.
Opener McGauty played a typically stoic innings to finish unbeaten on 36 while Jones finished on 27 not out to ease Carmel over the line in 29.1 overs to clinch a 8-2 points victory. Full scorecard here…
