Dafydd heroics in vain
24-04-10
Gwion Dafydd was impressive with both bat and ball as Carmel Second XI suffered a seven-wicket defeat in their opening North Wales Cricket League Division Four fixture against Bethesda Second XI.
After winning the toss and electing to bat Carmel lost Derek Johnson (11) and skipper Barry Mcgauty (8) early in the innings which brought Dafydd to the crease.
The teenager held the batting card together during a composed knock with Christopher Jones (6) the only batsman in a faltering middle order to trouble the scorers.
Lee Rowles (19) was one of only three players to make double figures but it was Dafydd's unbeaten 45 which added a degree of respectability to the total as Carmel were dismissed for 127 in 32.4 overs.
Carmel's rusty seam attack failed to make any inroads into Bethesda's top order after the tea interval despite some disciplined bowling as the hosts coasted to 84 without loss.
But leg-spinner Dafydd salvaged something as he claimed 2-27 while Mcgauty also grabbed a wicket to finish with 1-3 as Bethesda eased past the total for the loss of three wickets to take an 8-2 points win. Full scorecard here..
